Brexit-Beratungen

Die EU lässt die britische Premierministerin Theresa May brutal auflaufen. Was auch immer dahintersteckt – es ist brandgefährlich.

Es hätte alles so nett werden sollen bei den Beratungen zum Brexit in Salzburg. Ein paar freundlich-unverbindliche Worte, ein öffentliches Bekenntnis zu einer Einigung. Stattdessen ging die britische Premierministerin am Donnerstag gedemütigt vom Platz, und ihre Brexit-Strategie liegt in Scherben. Nicht nur hat EU-Ratspräsident Donald Tusk Mays „Chequers Plan“, der Großbritanniens Beibehaltung von EU-Regeln zum Warenverkehr vorsieht, rundheraus als undurchführbar zurückgewiesen.

Er machte in sozialen Medien außerdem geringschätzige Witze über die britische Regierungschefin, während Frankreichs Emmanuel Macron Brexit-Befürworter als „Lügner“ bezeichnete und andere Gipfelteilnehmer sich öffentlich wünschten, den Brexit ganz zu stoppen. Deutlicher konnte die EU nicht klarmachen, dass sie nicht mehr das geringste Interesse an einer gütlichen Einigung mit Großbritannien über den britischen EU-Austritt hat.

Damit gesellt sich die Europäische Union letztendlich zu Boris Johnson, Nigel Farage und anderen Brexit-Hardlinern in Großbritannien. Sie predigen seit dem Referendum von 2016: Austritt zuerst, dann Gespräche über alles andere.

Keine Übergangsfristen, keine Sonderregeln, keine Zahlungen, kein Chequers Plan – einfach ein klarer Schnitt. Theresa May hat vor Salzburg bei jeder Gelegenheit gesagt: Es gibt nur meinen Plan oder gar keinen. Wenn die EU ihren Plan ablehnt, leistet sie bewusst einem Austritt ohne Vereinbarung Vorschub.

Gespielte Aufregung

Für all das gibt es mehrere mögliche Erklärungen, keine davon schmeichelhaft. Die eine geht so: Die Aufregung ist nur gespielt. Eine Einigung ist längst unter Dach und Fach, aber weil May dafür nur dann zu Hause eine Mehrheit findet, wenn sie das als Sieg über die EU verkaufen kann, muss die EU jetzt so tun, als sei sie dagegen, um dann später so zu tun, als habe sie nachgegeben.

Abgesehen davon, dass es nicht das geringste reale Anzeichen für diese Annahme gibt, wäre diese Strategie in Salzburg deutlich über das Ziel hinausgeschossen. May hat in Reaktion die Gespräche mit der EU faktisch auf Eis gelegt und „Respekt“ gefordert.

Der Konsens in London ist jetzt nämlich: Mays Plan ist politisch tot. Und sie selbst eventuell auch, wenn sie auf das Auftrumpfen der EU nicht entsprechend hart reagiert. Wenn in gut einer Woche ihre Konservativen zum Jahresparteitag zusammentreten, geht es um ihr politisches Überleben.

Protesters pointed out that all the countries effected were Muslim majority nations and yet none of the countries targeted had any nationals implicated in any recent terrorist attack within the United States. Ironically it is US foreign policy in the Middle East, including years of bombing and support for regional dictators that is one of the main causes of the current refugee crisis.
